Rendering in Revit



Rendering is the result of processing a scene through graphics’ program to form a 2D or 3D image. One of the important parts of the design is checking the lighting design within the building. Lighting design should be checked for different purposes regarding the Electrical engineer, there is a minimum required Lighting level within the space that must be occurred in order to perform the required task efficiently and from the interior designer point of view it is important to place some lighting fixtures at definite spaces in order to ensure achieving the lighting mood with the space. Before using Revit coordination between the lighting designer and the electrical engineer which would not sound well for both as each one is given more concerns in relation to their target.


Using Revit solves part of the conflict between both the interior designer and the electrical engineer. Time Issue is a big problem as whenever the lighting designer changes part of his design the electrical engineer should follow. Revit solved a big problem as it is easy to check each change within the design easily as coordination is can be simply done.

It is important to know what kind of data can be submitted by Revit from the MEP point of view in order to be taken into consideration by lighting designer.

What is great about Revit is that you can prepare the entire lighting schedule including all the required data to assure the efficiency of your design. You can prepare a table including all the required lighting level within your building in terms of space discrimination as shown in the next table “Figure 2”



Later within each space you will be able to select the required lighting level in terms of space, consequently you can have your lighting schedule within minutes just by selecting the level of data you need within the table as it is automatically generated based on your requirements. As shown at the next figure 3, it is very easy to check the lighting level status without any need to wait until the render ends so this can be used in order to quickly check your design before generating the required scenes.


After generating this sheet it is now easy to check your design in addition to prepare some data that will be required later by other team members such as the lighting power density and some other parameters that you can be added while selecting the parameters within your sheet. Preparing the lighting schedule is very flexible because you can select all the parameters you need and in case another parameter is required it can be simply created and embedded within your schedule.


The next step after checking your design from the electrical point of view, including; load and amount of light needed then having scenes and some rendering for the spaces is a very important point to check that the selection of the lighting fixtures is matching with the space design, as well as matching with the colours.


There are some points that should be taken into consideration before rendering in order to get the best of the program. These points can be divided into the following steps as shown.


Step one: Lighting Group When adding your lighting points make sure that you are adding them in groups so while rendering you can select which part within your building needs to be rendered.

Step two: Checking Material After starting your render you have to check that all the materials are pre-defined as required within your design as this has a great impact on the results of your design.

Step three: Test your design For the first time render it is advised to render in a draft mood as this is only a test for the design to make the required modifications so it can be done through draft mood.


As the quality of the 3D view increases as much time you need to generate your picture. One of the good options that you can use to save time is “Rendering on cloud” this is perfect to save time as you can complete your work by the same time your picture is processing in addition to the difference in time as it takes less if it is rendered on cloud. Rendering can be done in different stages each stage increases the resolution of the processed image.
