CCAD BIM Journey

The dream which became a real

Every morning nearly 20,000 workers from all disciplines have a date with CCAD drawings. This means that all drawings should be well coordinated and verified. Small discrepancies might lead to unpredictable issues.

The history of CCAD

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is the result of a partnership agreement signed in 2006 between Mubadala Development Company and Cleve-land Clinic. The Clinic opened May 2015. This 364 (expandable to 490)bed facility will be an extension of the Cleveland Clinic model of care, offering a range of tertiary/ quaternary medical services. After completion, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi will be one of the largest medical centres in the Middle East.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi houses five clinic floors, three diagnostic and treatment levels and thirteen floors of critical and acute inpatient units totalling 364 beds. Addition- al space has been incorporated for operational and support departments, retailers, a conference centre and a clinical simulation centre. The hospital will be organized into the five institutes of Digestive Disease, Eye, Heart& Vascular, neurological, and Respiratory & Critical Care, to offer an advanced range of tertiary , quaternary medical services.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi & BIM

In keeping with Cleveland Clinic’s global goal to providethe very best in world class patient care from the time that the idea for a healthcare facility is conceived through the time of each future procedure performed in that facility, and in developing a standard to utilise available technologies to improve the construction of this facility and future facilities,Cleveland Clinic has included this plan for using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology as a tool to benefit the project by:

  • Enabling an accurate 3D representation of work installed, so that the work may be visualized and thus better coordinated and tracked.

  • Enabling more accurate spatial coordination of work elements prior to construction, building the project virtually before building it with bricks and mortar, to eliminate spatial conflicts and associated costly re-work and delays during field construction.

  • Enabling the potential, where practical, for contractors to pre-fabricate elements to expedite the work and to increase contractor efficiency and productivity.

  • Enabling contractors to, as a best practice, include value-added FM/COBIE information at Level of Detail (LOD) 500 within the contractors’ BIM-based models that may be useful to the Owner in its management of the facility throughout the facility’s post-construction lifecycle (such as, where applicable, serial numbers, warranty information, hyperlinks to Operations and Maintenance manuals, etc.)

I joined CCAD after the request from the client to do a potential change order for most of the medical andnon-medical areas. This came at very late stage of the construction. It was so hard task to do a design reviewfor more than 4000 drawings and feel confident that the next step of the construction is going in the righttrack. For sure such a huge job like that might not be done in the limited time frame and accuracy if BIM technology never used.
